For Commerce Graduates

Bank Jobs After B.Com

Of all the common degrees, commerce lines up most closely with what a bank does all day. Here is what your accounting papers are actually worth inside a branch, the roles you can start in, and the honest limits.

Where a B.Com actually helps

Yes. A B.Com is the closest common degree to what a bank actually does, and you do not need to clear a bank exam first. All 16 programs on this site ask for a graduate in any discipline, so your degree clears the bar on day one. What commerce adds on top is a genuine head start in credit and operations work, not only in sales.

The rest of this page is the detail: which of your subjects actually pay off, the three job families open to you, what the certifications cost, and the parts of the job your degree will not help with at all.

Where your commerce subjects pay off

Most pages about bank jobs after B.Com stop at "you are eligible". True, and not very useful. The useful part is that three years of accounting changes which jobs you can walk into and be good at quickly.

  • Financial accounting. You can read a balance sheet and a profit and loss statement without panic. That is the core skill in any lending role, where the question never changes: can this customer repay?
  • Taxation and GST. Business customers prove their income with returns and filings. If you already know what those documents are, you spend your time checking them instead of learning what they are.
  • Book-keeping and reconciliation. Branch operations is mostly matching one record against another and finding the entry that does not agree. You have done that on paper for years.
  • Auditing and business law. KYC rules, document checks and compliance feel like known territory rather than a new language.

Now the limit. None of this shows up in your first week. Week one is learning the products the bank sells, the software it runs on, and how to talk to a customer who is in a hurry. Your syllabus gives you an edge in month three, not on day one.

The three job families open to you

Fresher hiring in private banks splits broadly into three families. A B.Com fits all three, which is more than most degrees can claim.

Credit: the family your degree suits best

A credit role means deciding whether money should be lent, and on what terms. Our 90-day Finance and NBFC program costs Rs 42,000 and leads to a Credit Executive role. On the partner side, the Axis Bank Retail Lending program runs a year and leads to an Assistant Manager - Retail Lending post. Its fee is confirmed on the counselling call rather than published, and we will not invent a number for you.

Credit work suits people who like being careful. It is also slower and quieter than sales, and it still involves chasing customers for missing documents far more often than analysing anything.

Operations: steady work, a smaller shelf

Operations is the machinery behind the counter - account opening, clearing, corrections, service requests. The 90-day Fintech and Operations program costs Rs 40,000 and leads to an Operations Associate role. Among partner routes, Kotak Accelerate Operations is 45 days into a Customer Service Officer role, and the 3-month Axis Bank Operations Program leads to an Assistant Manager - Customer Service Officer post. Read that second one carefully before you apply: it is a women-only program. Both confirm their fee on the counselling call.

Here is the honest bit. Of our 16 programs, only three lead to operations roles and far more lead to sales. If your plan is "anything except sales", you are choosing from a smaller shelf, and the wait will usually be longer.

Sales and relationship: the widest door

The core 90-day Banking Program costs Rs 45,000 and leads to a Relationship Officer role. If money is the constraint, Axis Sales Academy is the only route here with a fee of Rs 0 - 6 days of virtual training, a funded banking certification, then a Business Development Executive (Officer - Sales) job at an Axis Bank branch near your home, typically within about 10 km. It pays a fixed salary plus performance incentives with medical benefits, confirmed on the counselling call. It also asks for 50% or more in graduation, age 21 to 28, a valid driving licence and access to a two-wheeler, because the job is field sales.

At the other end of the scale sits HDFC Bank Future Bankers 2.0: 12 months, joining as Deputy Manager (L2) - Personal Banker on a CTC of Rs 5,80,000, with a fee of Rs 2,54,228 plus GST and 3,500+ placed on our record. That fee is a serious amount of money. It is a real financial risk, it does not buy the hiring decision, and it is not something to borrow at a high interest rate. Weigh it against the free route above, and against simply applying to branches yourself, before you commit to anything.

Certifications: which ones, and when

Neither certification below is needed to apply. Both help once you are inside and selling.

NISM Series V-A is the mutual fund distributors exam from NISM, which was established by SEBI. It is 100 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes, a 50% pass mark, no negative marking, and it costs Rs 1,500 plus GST with payment gateway charges on top. You sit it on a computer at an NISM centre, you need a PAN, and the certificate is valid for three years. Passing it is what lets you get an AMFI ARN. Our NISM Series V-A exam guide walks through the whole process. A commerce background makes this one of the easier exams you will ever take.

IRDAI IC-38 is the insurance agents exam, conducted by the Insurance Institute of India. Training before the exam is mandatory, the minimum age is 18, and the catch is sponsorship: you generally need an insurer to put you forward, so you cannot simply book it yourself. Fees vary and are commonly quoted at Rs 500 to 800. Neither IRDAI nor the Institute publishes the pattern or the fee openly, so treat any site that states them as official with suspicion, ours included - our IC-38 guide is upfront about which parts are unverified.

A private-bank start suits you if

  • You want to be earning within months, not after a two-year exam cycle
  • You like the accounting side and want to grow into credit or operations
  • You are willing to do sales first if that is the door that opens
  • You are able to work out of a branch near your home every day

Look elsewhere if

  • A government bank job is the only outcome you will accept
  • You want a desk-only role from day one with no customer contact
  • You would need a high-interest loan to pay a programme fee
  • Monthly targets would make you miserable rather than competitive

No program can guarantee a job. Training and a certification get you in front of the bank; the hiring decision belongs to the bank.

What your degree will not do

  • It will not exempt you from targets. Even credit and operations teams are measured, and sales roles are measured monthly.
  • It will not guarantee a job. Nobody can promise you employment at another company. Read exactly what our placement support does and does not cover and hold every other provider to the same test.
  • It will not get you a government bank job. Those are filled through competitive exams such as IBPS and the SBI PO and Clerk processes. We publish no dates, vacancies or cut-offs and we run no exam coaching.
  • It will not fix a weak CV. One page, plain layout, marks and internship in the first half. Our free resume creator does it in a few minutes with no sign-up.

What to do next

  1. Pick the family first - credit, operations or sales - then compare all sixteen programs against that choice rather than against the biggest promise.
  2. Get the CV to one page.
  3. On the counselling call, ask four things in this order: the fee in writing, who issues the offer letter and pays the salary, the exact role title, and whether the pay is fixed, incentive-linked or both.
  4. If you are in your final year, apply now anyway. The core 90-day programs accept final-year students, so you do not have to wait for your result.

And if a younger cousin has been told there is a bank officer job waiting after school, send them the honest answer for 12th-pass candidates before anyone pays anyone anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a bank job straight after B.Com?

Yes. Graduation is the entry bar for all 16 programs on this site, and a B.Com clears it. You do not need to pass a bank exam for a private-bank fresher role. Final-year students are welcome on the core 90-day programs, so you can start the process before your results arrive.

Which bank roles suit a B.Com best?

Credit and operations, on top of the sales roles every graduate can apply for. The Finance and NBFC program (90 days, fee Rs 42,000) leads to a Credit Executive role, and Fintech and Operations (90 days, fee Rs 40,000) leads to an Operations Associate role. Your accounting papers are directly useful in both.

Do I need NISM or IRDAI certification before applying?

No. Neither is required to apply. NISM Series V-A costs Rs 1,500 plus GST, with gateway charges on top, and is what lets you get an AMFI ARN for mutual fund distribution. IRDAI IC-38 usually needs an insurer to sponsor you, so it normally comes after you join, not before.

What salary does a B.Com fresher get in a private bank?

We do not publish salary bands, because they differ by bank, city and role. The only figures we can stand behind are the ones our partners publish: HDFC Bank Future Bankers 2.0 states a CTC of Rs 5,80,000 for the Deputy Manager (L2) - Personal Banker role it leads to. Axis Sales Academy is a fixed salary plus performance incentives, confirmed on the counselling call. Treat any site quoting you an average package as guesswork.

Is there a free option for a commerce graduate?

One. Axis Sales Academy costs Rs 0 at every stage - 6 days of virtual training, a funded banking certification, then a Business Development Executive (Officer - Sales) job at an Axis Bank branch near your home. You need all five conditions: graduation, 50% or more in graduation, age 21 to 28, a valid driving licence and access to a two-wheeler.

Do my B.Com marks decide whether I am shortlisted?

The only marks rule we publish is the Axis Sales Academy one, which needs 50% or more in graduation. The other programs ask for graduation in any discipline. Individual banks may run their own screens on top, and the counselling call is where you get a straight answer on that rather than a guess from us.

B.Com or BBA - which is better for banking?

Both clear the bar. A B.Com gives you a head start in credit, lending and operations work because of the accounting papers. A BBA leans towards sales and relationship roles. Once you are a year into the job, nobody in the branch asks which one you did.
